Prop firm drawdown rules explained

Prop firm drawdown rules cap how much of your account you may lose. The daily limit restricts losses in a single trading day, and the maximum limit restricts total losses from your starting balance or from your peak equity. Breaking either one usually ends the challenge immediately.
Daily drawdown
The daily limit is usually a percentage of your starting balance or of the previous day’s balance or equity. Firms differ on whether floating losses count, and on what time the day resets. Read your firm’s definition, then use the strictest reading when you set an EA.
Maximum drawdown: static or trailing
- Static: the limit stays fixed at a level below your starting balance.
- Trailing: the limit rises as your equity or balance reaches new highs, so the room you have shrinks as you profit.
How to set EA risk around the rules
- Write down the daily and maximum limits in account currency, not just percent.
- Set a personal daily limit well inside the firm’s limit, for example half of it.
- Set risk per trade so a run of stop losses cannot reach your personal limit.
- Check the firm’s rules on EAs, news trading and holding over weekends.
What an EA cannot do
An EA applies rules consistently, but it cannot remove market risk, slippage on news or the chance of a losing streak. No EA guarantees a pass.
Frequently asked questions
Do prop firms allow EAs?
Many do, some restrict certain strategies such as high-frequency trading or copy trading. Read the rules for your specific challenge.
Does floating profit count in the daily limit?
It depends on the firm. Some measure equity, which includes floating profit and loss.
